MEET THE GUIDES

GOLDIE

Welcome to Scotland! I was born and raised in Glasgow, my mother’s home city and I share her pride in its culture, history and vibrancy. My father played the bagpipes and I grew up to the sound of the pipes and his fascinating stories about Scotland’s folklore, places and people. This is where my love of Scotland’s wonderful history, scenery, and of course our whisky began. As for food, nothing beats eating our top-quality seafood right by the waters it came from.

I volunteer with the National Trust for Scotland at Culross Palace in Fife, and really enjoy showing people from all nationalities around the amazing medieval palace and village, sharing its stories, secrets and Outlander connections. I am a great admirer of Scotland’s national bard, Robert Burns, and have organised, hosted and spoken at several Burns Suppers.

I have always been interested in people and history, and studied Archaeology, Social Sciences, and History at the University of Glasgow. I have a Master of Business Administration from Glasgow Caledonian University, and a Stage 2 qualification in British Sign Language. After a successful and rewarding career working with people who have a wide range of additional support needs, I am using all my interests and experiences in a different way as a Blue Badge Guide.

Scotland has so much to offer: vibrant cities, remote islands, amazing wildlife, inventors, heroes, musicians, writers, and of course friendly people. Whatever your interests or requirements, it would be my great pleasure to help you find the Scotland you are looking for. I look forward to meeting you soon.

Thank you so much, you have been a marvellous guide.

Wylye Valley Arts Society – October 2021

I did a private walking tour of Edinburgh with Moira. She painted a vivid picture of life in the castle and the Royal Mile hundreds of years ago as well as more modern sites and stories. I enjoyed this tour immensely. Moira was warm and friendly with the right mix of historical accuracy, humour, and stories. I would highly recommend her.

Betty Craig – November 2019

My friend and I did a walking tour of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. We enjoyed all Moira’s stories and things she pointed out which we would have missed. The tour was very enjoyable. We highly recommend Moira, especially her patience with our many photostops!

Jan Leitch – February 2019

Moira, you have brought Robert Burns the person to life. Now that I really understand what’s behind the poems, I’m going off to read some of them again!

WHAT MAKES ME SPECIAL

I’m really interested in the people who lived and worked in the places I visit on tour. I’m also intrigued by magic and folklore and love to share mysterious tales about fairies, witches, ghosts and mythical creatures.

tour with me because

Scotland’s people are as important as the scenery, history and architecture  … so I’ll bring the places we visit to life with stories about ordinary folk as well as famous Kings, Queens and heroes.

WHAT I’M LIKE

I am easy going but also thrawn – a good Scottish word that means I’m stubborn and don’t give up easily. I like to keep busy and always have a crafting, baking or planting project on the go. Guests I’ve had on tour say I’m friendly and easy to talk to, take time to get things just right for my guests, and I really care about the places I visit with them.

FAVOURITE SCOTTISH FOOD

No question, it’s wonderful fresh Scottish seafood. Oysters, mussels, scallops, and langoustines, preferably eaten by the sea on a sunny day.

AN OBSCURE FACT

My father played the bagpipes, so they have always been part of my life. As an adult I decided to learn to play for myself. I took a 12-week course at the National Piping Centre in Glasgow but found it really difficult so my piping career didn’t last long!

FAVOURITE SCOTTISH SONG

The Loch Tay Boat Song, a traditional song about a man’s heartache over his beautiful but unfaithful nighean ruadh (little red haired girl).  It beautifully describes the sunsets, mountains and places around Loch Tay, as well as mentioning the fairy folk.  It doesn’t get much more Scottish than that.

FAVOURITE PLACE

The Royal Burgh of Culross in Fife – an amazing 16th Century village with its very own palace and abbey. Wandering the winding streets, ancient buildings and ochre coloured palace is like stepping back in time. No wonder it is used as a film set for Outlander!
