Guided tours of St Andrews, Scotland

Let’s start with golf – taking in the iconic Old Course and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, there will be lots of opportunities to take some photos, visit the Golf Museum and pick up gifts at the various shops nearby.

It’s only a short walk to the West Sands where the famous opening scene of the Oscar Winning Chariots of Fire was filmed. You’ll hear the back-story to the film as well as how the scene was re-enacted by local school children when the Olympics was hosted by Great Britain in 2012.

From there we’ll walk along The Scores – a Norse name for ‘High Cliffs’- to the Martyrs Monument. Listen to the story of the 24 year old Patrick Hamilton executed for his beliefs as well as other tragic stories of martyrdom. We’ll pause to look at the Butts – the place where archery was practised by young men preparing to go into battle in the 15thCentury.

We’ll then cut through to North Street and walk along to St. Salvator’s College, the oldest college of the oldest Scottish University. We’ll see the quadrangle where students gather after graduation as well as for some of the more unusual events that are part of the quirky traditions of St. Andrews University.

Before heading to look at the ruins of the Abbey, we will pause at the Northpoint Café where a certain Prince of the Realm between lectures courted his future wife whilst sipping cups of tea.

We can then enjoy some well-earned lunch at a local fish and chip restaurant and perhaps afterwards join the queue to choose from one of the 100+ flavours on offer at the local gelateria.

All of our walking tours can be tailored to what you want to see and experience.

If you’re unsure, then let us help you. We can devise a tour of St Andrews that includes your  preferred sights. Leave it to us and we’ll slot in a few secret places too.
