Guided tours of Inverness, Scotland

With its pleasant waterfront, alongside the River Ness, the city is a great place to walk.

Starting outside the “unfinished” cathedral of St Andrew’s we walk past substantial Victorian buildings built using beautiful local red sandstone.

Tales and legends

Discover a sinister link with the drug trade that started the Opium Wars in the Far East. Try steadying yourself as we wobble over the ‘Shooglie Bridge’ to the other side of the river. Is this the location of the first recorded sighting of the Loch Ness Monster back in the 600s?

There are also reminders of the upheavals of the Jacobite uprisings when the Highlands were at the centre of a brutal civil war. We head through the city centre to see the recently restored Town House, where a holidaying Prime Minister and his Cabinet made decisions that would end in a country’s independence.

Finally, it is a short distance to Inverness Castle a great vantage point to hear the tale of a flying dog and enjoy the views across the city.

Culloden Battlefield

The barren windswept moorland above Inverness witnessed the Battle of Culloden in April 1746. Join your guide as they take you around the battlefield on this 90-minute walking tour following in the footsteps of Bonnie Prince Charlie and his Jacobite soldiers. We stand on the Government frontline, where they prepared to unleash their artillery bombardment to commence battle.

From there, we head to the middle of the battlefield, which saw the most ferocious fighting. Here there are tales of heroic clan chiefs, stories of strategic blunders and accounts of bloody retribution in the battle’s aftermath. We walk past the clan markers and memorial cairn commemorating the Highland families that fought for the Jacobite cause as we head back to the National Trust Visitor Centre where guests can spend time exploring the informative battlefield exhibition.
